Older VPN protocols like OpenVPN carry decades of accumulated configuration options and legacy code. WireGuard was built from scratch with a deliberately minimal design — its entire codebase is a small fraction of the size, which means fewer places for bugs or vulnerabilities to hide. It's also noticeably faster to establish a connection and generally delivers better throughput on the same hardware.
