A shared IP is a public IP address that your VPN server presents to the internet while many other customers use the same address at the same time. From the outside, traffic from different people looks like it comes from the same place — requests, cookies, and connections are mixed together at network level.

A dedicated IP is reserved for one account or one user. Every time you connect through that VPN endpoint, the same public IP is presented. The address does not rotate between customers and is therefore easier to link to a single user or set of credentials.

Providers implement these two models differently. Shared setups typically use large pools of IPs and often combine them with NAT (network address translation) so hundreds or thousands of sessions can share a smaller set of public addresses. Dedicated IPs are usually one‑to‑one assignments. Some providers call a dedicated IP “static.” That term can be ambiguous: static only guarantees the address doesn’t change; dedicated emphasises that no one else uses it.

Operationally, dedicated IPs commonly appear as an add‑on you request or pay extra for. Shared IPs are the default on most consumer VPN plans because they’re cheaper to run and better for anonymity by design.

Privacy and anonymity trade-offs

Shared IPs are stronger for anonymity. When many users share the same public address, it’s harder for a third party to say which person performed which action. This is useful if your goal is to avoid fingerprinting, reduce tracking tied to IP addresses, or make it more difficult for automated profiling systems to single you out.

Dedicated IPs are easier to associate with a single user. Even if the VPN provider keeps no logs, a dedicated IP raises correlation risk: websites, authentication logs, and persistent cookies can be tied back to that single address. Over time, the pattern of where you log in from and which accounts use the address makes it possible to link activity.

That doesn’t mean shared IPs are flawless. If one user of a shared IP engages in abuse, the whole IP can acquire a bad reputation — more captchas, blocks, or blacklisting. In other words, shared anonymity is mutual: it hides you among others but also exposes you to their reputational risks.

Access, reliability and performance differences

Dedicated IPs reduce the chance of false positives from services that block or challenge VPN traffic. Banks, workplaces, remote management systems, and some two‑factor systems are sensitive to unusual IPs and geographic hops. Using the same IP repeatedly lowers friction: fewer captchas, fewer extra authentication prompts, and a simpler path for allowlisting.

For streaming and access-restricted services, a dedicated IP can be more stable because the service sees a single, consistent address rather than a rotating pool. That said, major streaming platforms actively block many VPN IPs whether they’re shared or dedicated — a dedicated IP is not a guaranteed bypass.

Performance and predictability are another area where dedicated IPs usually win. Because fewer users share the same endpoint, throughput and latency are more consistent. Shared IP performance can vary significantly depending on how congested the server and IP are at any given moment.

If you host services — game servers (Minecraft included), remote desktop, or a personal web service — a dedicated IP plus port forwarding is typically the preferred setup. It lets you run consistently reachable servers without the NAT complications and ephemeral addresses of shared setups.

Downsides and operational risks of a dedicated IP

The primary downside is lower anonymity. When you reuse the same IP for browsing, logging into accounts, and hosting, your activity becomes linkable. Treat a dedicated IP like an identity token: anything associated with it builds a pattern.

Blacklisting and abuse are more concentrated. If the dedicated IP gets flagged for malicious behaviour, that flag applies directly to you. With shared IPs you can sometimes “ride out” a temporary block while users rotate; with a dedicated address you must react — rotate, request a new IP, or resolve the abuse complaint.

There’s usually an extra cost and a bit more management overhead. Providers often charge a premium for dedicated IPs. Operationally you should monitor the address, be ready to request a replacement if it’s abused, and treat the IP as an asset: configure DNS, secure credentials, and avoid mixing risky behaviour on that address.

Legal exposure is more straightforward with a dedicated IP. Subpoenas or law‑enforcement requests aimed at activity on that IP point to a single account much more easily than with a shared pool.
